As per belief, Swami Haridas was the first person who composed Brindavani Sarang raag. He used to live in Brindavan, a place in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Therefore, this raag named as Brindavani Sarang.
The Hindu Mythology believes that Swami Haridas bought Lord Krishna to earth by singing this raag. Later, it became one of most widely used raag in the region around Mathura.
Brindavani Saarang is one of the famous raag of Saarang family, together with Shuddha Sarang, and Madhyamad Sarang. It belongs to Kafi Thaat whose main characteristic is Komal ” Ni(k) ” and Komal ” Ga(k) “.
Usually, it is rendered in the late evening and uses all the seven notes in ascending and descending order. This raag uses shudh ” Ni ” in its Aaroh and Komal ” Ni(k) ” in its Avroh.
The notes Ga and Dha are not used in this raag. A characteristic of all Sarang is the way Rishab (Re) is sung. The Rishabh is not accorded embellishments, so it is sung without any meenḍ of adjacent swaras neither with any andolan. This preeminence of Re(Rishab) makes the swar the vadi of this Raga is also for all other varieties of this family.
