Malkauns is one of the oldest Raag in Indian classical music.The word ‘ Malkauns ‘ is made of two words Mal and Kaushik which means the one who wears serpents like a garland. As per Hindu believers, this raag was composed to soothe the rage of Lord Shiva when he learned the death of one of his wives, Sati. It is also called Malkans and Maalaukaushik.
Swar groups like Ma Ga Ma Ga Sa and Ga Ma Dha Ni SA are frequently used in this raag and this raag practiced mostly in the lower octave.This raag categorized under serious Raag where singers sing all kinds of bandish like Khayal, Dhrupad, Dhamar and Tarana.
Besides, Malkauns raag becomes Chandrakauns raag if Komal Ni of this raag is replaced with shudh Ni swar.
